Keep It Simple: My Coaching Ethos

My theory of learning golf came after over 20 years of study, research and practice using all the latest technology and equipment, and then being struck by the blindingly obvious fact that if, me, a knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated Professional of the sport ends up  scratching his head, then this is probably the experience of the Club Golfer too!

Over time, I watched golfing technology improve tremendously, but this did not reflect an improvement in the overall standard of golf.  It seemed to only improve the cream of the crop; and left everyone else behind.  The intuition and feel displayed by the greats - Seve, Nicklaus, Palmer and even Bubba - was disappearing, and a new era of range and studio based coaching that was heavily reliant on technology began.

I started asking my students  if they have ever had a lesson on the golf course, and unbelievably , for a huge number, the answer was no! You wouldn't learn to swim without getting into a pool, or to cycle without getting on a bike, but its the norm to not have a lesson on the golf course?? But when asked, loads of golfers had experience of using hi-tech swing monitors and other gadgets and gizmos during their lessons to "help" them understand their golf swing.

It seemed to be the generally accepted the position, that the more complicated a golf lesson was, or the more information or points to work on that you came away with, was the benchmark of what constituted a "good" golf lesson - even if you didn't improve.  People blamed their lack of improvement on their own absence of talent, rather than an overload of information and poor coaching.

After years of this approach not working, I believed there must be a better way to get results. It fuelled my curiosity and, armed with all I needed to know about golf, I changed tactic and started to improve my skills as a golf coach by researching how people learn and develop skills generally. What I discovered, and I will help you discover, was that much of what I thought about how to improve at golf was misinformed.

I discovered that golf lessons didn't need to be complicated to help you lower your score, and in fact often hindered rather than helped progress. I discovered that for most of you exploring what you actually do on the golf course can dramatically lower your scores. I discovered that creating a long term relationship between coach and student  helps me to understand your habits and help me to help you to improve your golf.

Keeping it Simple WORKS.  The ideal is a mix of on course and range lessons. You will learn to play by "feel", and to have confidence in  your own swing.  You  won't ever leave my lessons with any more than 2 or 3 things to work on.  You will have access to my supervised practice sessions if you wish, and if you sign up to the Birdie, Eagle or Albatross Golf Improvement Plans, then results are GUARANTEED!!
